"I should estimate that in my experience most troubles and most possibilities for improvement
add up to the proportions something like this: 94% belongs to the system
(responsibility of management), 6% special"
Aim: For attendees to understand and begin applying Deming's System of Profound Knowledge to lead and manage their organizations.
This seminar explores simple and powerful principles and is appropriate for anyone who manages people or who holds executive responsibility. Topic areas include the four elements of Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge (a.k.a. The Deming Management Method)
Dr. Deming said, “a bad system will beat a good person every time”. At this seminar you will learn to look at your organization through a new lens; a lens of how to make your system better – and thus get better results. You will gain new knowledge to remove barriers, increase efficiencies, reduce wasted time, boost motivation, and provide better insight into what’s really going on in your organization. And, you’ll discover how to measure what is (and is not) realistically possible for your organization to achieve.
This seminar explores simple and powerful principles and is appropriate for anyone who manages people or who holds executive responsibility. Topic areas include the four elements of Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge (a.k.a. The Deming Management Method):
- Understanding of and Appreciation for your Organization as a System - How to lead & optimize a system - not destroy it. Foster Respect and Joy in work.
- Understanding Variation - Conclusions we can/cannot make from data & observations. Actions to take.
- The Theory of Knowledge - Is what we “know” really so? Learning - Improvement - Rational Thinking.
- Understanding Psychology – The truth about how humans react & interact. Beliefs - Behaviors - Consequences.
Through enjoyable and engaging hands-on activities, small group breakouts, energetic work sessions, discussions and Q & A, you will gain visibility into what is holding you back – and where you can improve effectiveness, reduce costs, increase productivity, and accelerate growth and innovation. Bill Bellows, Ph.D.
Bill joined The W. Edwards Deming Institute® in October 2016 as the Deputy Director. In this role, Bill works in collaboration with Kevin Cahill to guide the worldwide efforts of the Institute to achieve its aim.
Prior to joining The Deming Institute, Bill was employed by Aerojet Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, California, serving as an Associate (Technical) Fellow, focusing on "thinking about thinking" with applicability to the design, development, and production of liquid rocket engines. In a 26-year career that spanned ownership of “Rocketdyne” by Rockwell International, Boeing, United Technologies, and Aerojet, Bill was widely known for his efforts to provide insights to the advantages of thinking together, learning together, and working together. While integrating the management methods of W. Edwards Deming with Genichi Taguchi’s “Quality by Design” system and Russ Ackoff's systems thinking, coupled with Edward de Bono’s thinking tools, he pioneered the development and application of ideas that include Mixed Model Management, Macro System Models, Micro System Models, Purposeful Resource Leadership, Category & Continuum Thinking, and Investment Thinking.
Away from “Rocketdyne,” audiences for Bill’s presentations and seminars have reached after-school programs in elementary schools, graduate students at Northwestern University, as well as corporate, university, and public classes across the United Kingdom. Bill earned his BS, MS, and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. In addition to his employment by “Rocketdyne,” Bill worked as a heat transfer engineer in the gas turbine industry for Textron Lycoming in Stratford, Connecticut. In this role, he gained experience as an in-house problem solving consultant, facilitator, and instructor, working in critical Engineering-Manufacturing Task Forces.
Away from work, Bill serves as chairman of the Deming Medal Committee for the American Society of Quality and is an editorial board as well as columnist for the UK’s Lean Management Journal (www.leanmj.com).
