The words “I Make no Apologies for Learning” from Dr. W. Edwards Deming are as relevant and valuable today as they ever have been. His approach to improving quality, performance and innovation can propel you and your organization forward when you learn how to challenge your thinking about your own management, leadership and transformation.
Dr. Deming has been given many titles; perhaps the most important is that of lifelong learner. In a world where 4.6 years is the median job tenure and 11 is the average number of jobs that people aged 18-48 will hold in their lifetime, there is nothing but learning to be done in order to simply survive. While “survival is not mandatory,” learning in our modern day certainly is.
This is a story best told by practitioners of The Deming System of Profound Knowledge®. This conference features leaders in education, government and in industry, leaders who today are shaping their organizations by disrupting the prevailing management concepts and superstitions. You will be able to hear their story of how they have practiced Deming’s philosophy through the system of profound knowledge and expanded on Deming’s philosophy by their practice in their very real organizations.
Dr. Deming made an especially powerful impact on the people of Michigan during his many years of teaching and consulting in the state. His legacy includes a rich community of leaders who believe that organizations are places where we aim for everyone to gain; where restoration of the individual is an objective and where cooperation between customers and suppliers is a way of life.

Red Bead Redux – Facilitated by Jim Manley
This Pre-Conference demonstration of Deming’s “The Red Bead Experiment” is a customized version and powerful illustration of the futility of improving personal performance through the methods of Taylor-ism and Skinner-ism when the fundamental problem comes from the system. Minor changes in the mixing box shape this version of the red bead experience into a powerful demonstration on top of Deming’s original version. The supply of red beads is changed for each of the daily shifts and Jim engages one more role and ample action to demonstrate the prevailing style of management at work – destroying the system they are responsible for, while the employees are not permitted to communicate or improve the system they are trapped in.
